The Heritage Route

Hyderabad is a city with a history that reads like a love story and a past that sounds like a fairy tale. The rule of the Nizams fill pages and pages of this history with a legendary patronage of arts, architecture and science. Testimony to this sensitivity are the many exquisite monuments of Hyderabad.

The Run Starts at Chowmahalla Palace and ends at Qutub Shahi Tombs.

Chowmahalla Palace

Chowmahalla Palace

One monument that in its intrinsic grandeur still exudes the power of yore is the Chowmahalla Palace. It consists of two courtyards with elegant palaces, the grand Durbar Hall, fountains and gardens.

 

Charminar

Charminar

Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the 5th ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty built Charminar in 1591 AD. He built this famous structure to commemorate the elimination of a plague epidemic from this city. He is said to have prayed for the end of a plague that was ravaging his city and vowed to build a masjid (Islamic mosque) at the very place where he was praying. The Mosque became popularly known as Charminar because of its four (Persian/Hindi char = four) towers.

 

Mecca Masjid

Jama Masjid

Mecca Masjid was built during the reign of Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah, the 6th Qutb Shahi Sultan of Golconda (now Hyderabad). The three arched facades have been carved from a single piece of granite, which took five years to quarry. More than 8,000 workers were employed to build the mosque. Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah personally laid the foundation stone of the mosque. The construction was later completed by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb after conquring Hyderabad.

 

High Court

High Court

The High Court stands on the south bank of the River Musi. This is one of the finest buildings in the city, built in red and white stones in Saracenic style.

 

Osmania Hospital

Osmania Hospital

Osmania General Hospital is one of the oldest hospitals in India located at Afzal Gunj, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. It was built during the time of the Last Nizam, Osman Ali Khan, and is named after him. It is run by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, and is one of the biggest in the state.
The hospital has a bed capacity of 1,168 which is split into 363 super-speciality beds, 160 emergency beds and 685 general beds. It has 250 physicians of which 60 are professors and 190 are civil assistant surgeons. More than 530 nursing staff serve this hospital.

 

Mozamjahi Market

Mozamjahi Market

It was constructed in 1935 during the reign of the last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan. It was named after his second son Moazzam Jah. Jambagh flower market was a part of the market. The fruit market was shifted to Kothapet Fruit Market in 1980s.

 

Public Gardens & AP Legislative Assembly

AP Legislative Assembly

Public Gardens earlier known as Bagh-e-Aam is a historic park located in the heart of the city. This is the home for Major landmarks like the AP Legislative Assembly, State Archaeology Museum.

 

Ravindra Bharathi

Ravindra Bharati

Ravindra Bharathi has been a prestigious National theatre, constructed by the Government of Andhra Pradesh on the name of Sri. Rabindranath Tagore , the first Nobel laureate from Asia, to serve the cultural needs of Andhra Pradesh. The theatre was commissioned during the centenary celebrations of Sri. Rabindranath Tagore . The foundation stone for the theatre was laid by Dr. B. Gopal Reddy on 23rd March 1960 and Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then Vice President of India, declared the open of the theatre on 11th May 1961.

 

Hussain Sagar

Hussain Sagar

The Hussain Sagar Lake has been the center of Hyderabad civilisation and it is linking the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. An 18 meter high monolithic statue of Lord Buddha towers over the lake from atop the Rock of Gibraltar. Built in the 16th century the lake was named to express the gratitude of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah to Hussain Shah Wali who helped him to recover from illness. It is a sprawling artificial lake that holds water perennially. Linking the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, the lake and its environs have several parks and scenic spots.

Any government department needs a proper guide who coordinates and initiates the works related to the department. This high profile job is carried on by the departmental secretaries. The Andhra Pradesh Government secretaries or the Andhra Pradesh Secretariat Departments are also carrying on their jobs with utmost responsibilities.

 

Taramati Baradari

Taramati Baradari

Abdullah Qutb Shah is believed to have enjoyed Taramati's song and dance from Golconda fort. Her melodious voice would be carried by the breeze, reaching the prince's ear at the Golconda fort, because of the acoustics model, in the structure as well as that of the Golconda fort. The baradari with 12 doorways were to allow cross ventilation, considered to be the most ingenious technique at the time.

Golconda Fort

The Golconda Fort was founded as a mud fort during the 13th century and became the capital of the Qutb Shahi kingdom in the 16th century. The giant fort was the centre of a flourishing diamond trade and is one of the most famous forts in the country.

 

Qutub Shahi Tombs

Qutub Shahi Tombs

Nowhere in history has an entire dynasty of rulers been buried at a single site other than the Qutub Shahi Tombs. Just a kilometer away from the Golconda Fort, the tombs were designed and commissioned by the Qutub Shahi rulers themselves. Built in an Indo-Persian style, the structures have a square base with domes that have pointed arches.
